Global dining has changed with the emergence of meal delivery services like Uber Eats, Zomato, and Swiggy. Despite their efficacy, recent delivery mishaps in India have raised concerns about client safety and quality control.

Concerns over meal delivery services have been raised by alarming instances such as a human finger found in Yummo ice cream, a dead centipede found in Amul ice cream, and a dead mouse found in Hershey’s chocolate syrup. Maggots were also recently found in a Hyderabadi man’s chicken biryani, which he had ordered from Swiggy. What is more astonishing, though, is the return that Swiggy provided. Outrage about it may be found all over the internet.

Hyderabad discovers a bug in the chicken biryani he ordered from Swiggy

A man from Hyderabad named Sai Teja recently claimed to have found bugs in his chicken biryani. That biryani was ordered through Swiggy from Mehfil Kukatpally, a well-known local eatery. Teja posted images of a dish that appeared to include maggots on social media as an outlet for his annoyance. He stated that the supper cost him Rs 318. But all he received back from Swiggy was a refund of Rs. 64 after complaining.

He cautioned others not to order from this restaurant on X (formerly Twitter). Teja also posted screen grabs from his conversation with a Swiggy customer service representative. The chat agent made it clear that the restaurant was in charge of packing the food. Surprisingly, the agent only offered a meagre Rs. 64 compensation in return.

His tweets quickly gained popularity. Many people chastised Swiggy for offering such a meagre reimbursement in Teja’s post’s comment section. Others requested that Swiggy add establishments that regularly cause these kinds of errors to their blacklist. Many others in the comment section have related their own experiences of a similar nature.

Later, he was granted a complete refund by Swiggy.

After his article went viral, Teja got a call from another Swiggy employee. The individual suggested that he file a complaint with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and promised him a full refund. About this, Teja wrote,

These incidents demonstrate the growing prevalence of concerns over food safety and quality control in the online meal delivery industry. Even if companies like Swiggy have policies in place to deal with consumer concerns, the regularity of these alarming allegations emphasises the need for stricter regulatory oversight and greater accountability from restaurants and food delivery services.
