Most times you don’t know your true calling until it finds you. For Eric white, 33, the founder and owner of Zydeco Construction his destiny was certainly much of a mystery. The once-homeless man certainly didn’t see himself owning a Louisiana based construction company that build’s beaches on people’s backyards racking in millions in revenue.
White has had a tough childhood, even becoming homeless for several months when he was 15. “Growing up, things weren’t easy for me,” he said. White’s is a typical grass to grace story. He dropped out of school in the ninth grade and only had a second-grade reading skill. “I could hardly even spell my own name,” he said.
Despite his limitation in formal education, he always felt he had a thing for construction. “I knew if I worked at it, I could really do something with it.”He got his first job in a local construction company just to pay his bills.
He, later on, landed a job at a company based in Baton Rouge at a minimum wage of $12 an hour. “The guy that I worked for there took me under his wing and taught me about the company. Within the first six months, I was managing the team,” said White.
Driven by an insatiable ambition, white continued to work his way up the ladder with various construction companies. He eventually summoned the courage to start his own company, settling in the pool business called cool pools. “That business did very well, and last year, I sold it for over a million dollars,” he said.
He moved on to the next venture, starting Zydeco Construction. A company specializing in building beach like “swimming pools” with a crystal blue radiation and surrounding beach sand. Each pond is unique and customizable according to the customer’s preferences with a range of outfits such as kitchens, gazebos, umbrellas and volleyball nets.
“I built Zydeco company to keep me busy and have some of my creative visions become a reality,” he said.White believes that there are limitless options when it comes to designing your ‘dream beach.’ To achieve this feat, he has dedicated countless hours to research and applying the knowledge in the construction of these beautiful ponds.
“It’s something that for years I would think to myself, what if someone could figure out a way to turn a pond into a paradise?’ I did as much research as I could and applied it to building these ponds.”Talking about his passion, White said, “It has always been a dream of mine to do these different things.”
