When last year, someone said, “Pakistan did not kill my father, it was the war,” the whole country was outraged. But what if I say the statement is true to the core? There are people who just for the sake of power wage wars which, to be honest, are not even necessary. you must have come across the pictures and videos of the things happening in Syria so far. Images and videos of dead children are all over the internet and trust me, they can easily tear anyone apart. What’s even the point of fighting a war when innocent people are the ones who are suffering? This needs to stop. Humanity needs to be saved.
Eight long years, that’s the extent to which the war in Syria has happened and perpetually happening. It all started in 2011 during the Arab Spring when a successful uprising toppled Tunisia’s and Egypt’s presidents. This gave a hope to the Syrian pro-democracy activists to protest against the atrocious Syrian government, led by the president, Bashar-Al-Assad. The government responded to the peaceful protests by killing the demonstrators by open firing. In July 2011, defectors from the military announced to form the Free Syrian Army, a rebel group to fight and overthrow the government and since Syria slipped into Civil war.
Now coming to international involvement. On one hand, Iran has been a constant supporter of Al-Assad against the rebels. On the other hand, the Arabs and Turkey were backing the rebels because they don’t have good relations with Iran. Russia entered the conflict in 2015 and has been the Assad government’s main ally since then. The governments of the majority Shia countries like Iran, Iraq and the Lebanon based Hezbollah have supported Al-Assad while the Sunni majority countries Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi supported rebels.
Meanwhile somewhere in between ISIS was created out of a conflict in between Al-Qaida. And the ISIS kind of fights against the rebels and the Kurds. Coming to US and Russia involvement. So, the U.S has repeatedly stated its opposition to Al-Assad govt but it never involved much. But then the Al-Assad govt. used chemical weapons against the civilians which led to a massive death toll. It was then that the former president Obama warned them that they will now intervene. In April 2017, the U.S carried its first direct military action against Assad’s forces launching 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air force base.
It must be noted that U.S had also intervened before in 2013 when the CIA began a covert programme to arm, fund, and train rebel groups but the programme was later shut down after it was revealed that the CIA had spent $500m but only trained 60 fighters.
In September 2015, Russia launched a bombing campaign against the rebels calling them ‘terrorist groups’ in Syria which included ISIL, Anti-Assad rebel groups backed by the US. And meanwhile, in UN security council Russia and China have repeatedly vetoed the Western-backed resolution on Syria. Right now both Russia and U.S are claiming to fight against ISIS because of its atrocities worldwide but then they have conflicts regarding their respective allies with Al-Assad and the rebels, making it a Proxy war situation.
Syrian government force backed by Russian warplanes have continued to hit the rebels enclave of the eastern Ghouta resulting in hundreds of death of the civilians. And eastern Ghouta has been under siege since 2013 and is the last remaining rebel stronghold. As of now, the war continues happening and innocent people are being killed.
As per the statistics,
1) More than 340,000 people have been killed since the conflict erupted in 2011.
2) A close to 500,000 people continue living in fear in the eastern Ghouta.
3) The last air strike resulted in the death of almost 400+ people, out of which100-150 were children.
